How to Make a Trophy Case

On :2011-8-19 10:42:15

If you have treasured heirlooms and trophies lying around in your home, building a trophy case is an excellent idea. A trophy case helps you store memorabilia and other precious evidence of your winning achievements in sports and other fields. The materials will depend on your preference. Commonly used materials for trophy cases are glass and plywood. You may even want to match the trophy case with the existing furniture in your home.

Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Glass
  • Biscuits
  • Clamps
  • Newspaper
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood glue
  • Surface plane
  • Biscuit joiner
  • Handheld power planer
  • Bandsaw
  • Belt sander or drum sander
  • Pocket hole screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Cleats
  1.

o    1

Surface plane all rough wood boards to the required dimension of three-quarters of an inch.

o    2

Use the biscuit joiner to smooth and cut slots on the edges of the board. You can also use a hand-held power planer if a joiner is not available.

o    3

Lay and arrange wooden boards to form the bottom section of the trophy case. This will make it easier for you to mark their edges for the biscuits to be installed later. Set the biscuit joiner to a measurement of half the thickness of the wooden boards. Proceed to cut the boards using the biscuit joiner.

o    4

Put a newspaper on your workbench or any other flat surface. Position the clamps on the newspaper and lay the boards on top of the clamps. Ensure that they are properly aligned.

o    5

Put glue in the biscuit holes, starting with one wooden board. Place biscuits in the holes, then apply glue in the biscuit holes of the edges of the board, including the joining edge. Continue with this procedure with the rest of the wooden boards.

o    6

Join the wooden boards together with clamps. Ensure that the biscuits are aligned. Add clamps between the previously installed clamps on the edges. This will help squeeze out the glue on the entire joints. Install pocket-hole screws using a drill on one piece of the wooden board to form the front face frame. Secure wooden boards to dry overnight.

o    7

Get the bottom section wooden board and cut rabbets in the rear. Install the bottom shelves or panels to the face frame using glue and pocket-hole screws. Attach the top and bottom pieces to the frame. Place cleats on the inside of the panels, and attach the bottom panel. Cut the bottom panels and shape accordingly using a bandsaw. Smooth the surface with sandpaper.

o    8

Assemble the top section with pocket-hole screws on the face frame. Use the biscuit joints to fasten the face frame to the sides. The bottom section of the trophy case is attached to the top section using screws installed from the underside.

o    9

Install the glass case door on the face frame. Pre-cut glass can be bought from hardware and construction stores. Just provide the measurements that you want. Rail-and-stile joinery is used in the mechanism of the case door.
